How to Create the Mood With Lighting for Any Special Activity at Home

Most of us turn to decorative lights only when special holiday comes. We have string lights for decorating trees on Christmas season. We use candles on Valentine's Day for romantic dinner. We use lights for ambiance of a party. Then have you ever made the best use of the holiday lights for such occasions when we have friends to entertain at home or when the family enjoy dinner together?

Decorative lights are one of the most useful yet not necessarily expensive decorations for homeowners to use for influencing the ambiance of the home, sometimes subtly but always effectively. We can use the decorative lighting for convenience, comfort, improving quality or happiness of our life or setting special mood for our guests. Skillful use of lighting usually bring about various emotional responses, and then create more fun, romance or cheer.

There are a lot of lights for setting up the mood, from LED lights, holiday lights, lamps, chandeliers, accent lights, etc. Here are some tips for using the lights at home to increase the level of enjoyment or impress others.

Lights for Entertaining Friends

When we have friends home, we can use decorative lights to bring some change to our home decor and impress our friends with inviting atmosphere. For inviting warmth and cheeriness, we can use lights with colors such as orange and red. Red lights, especially the lights on a red wall can even intensify its visual effect that makes guests feel they are welcome. For a cheerful mood, we can use brighter light, but never let the guests sit in direct light. The bright light can be focused its light on the walls or used to accent a piece of artwork at home, which might attract your friends and create more leisurely topics.

Lights for Romantic Dinner

If you only remember to use lights for romantic mood on Valentine’s Day, you must still be far away from being a person of interest or fun. We can make our wife, husband or even a whole family feel relaxed and intimate by using decorative lights during dinnertime. Such intimate feeling can be achieved by lowering the overall lighting levels or subduing colors of the lights. Warm soft lights are more flattering to us and we can choose some accent lights for embellishing the table centerpieces to enhance the mood.

Welcome Guest With Lights

The entrance, front porch or even the garden of our home is where our guests gain a first impression about our house and even may guess how the inside will be. We can set the tone for the evening. Decorative lights can serve the purpose of welcoming our guests upon their step on the areas of our home even when we are not informed of their arrival in time. At night, guests will be naturally attracted to illuminated areas. We can use holiday lights for outside decoration, say, a Christmas tree lights in the garden or front porch to welcome our guests or accent the road to our home with some decorative lights.

Lights for Pre-Bedtime Ritual

Most of us need such a ritual before we go to bed, which can realize transition from the alertness of the day to restfulness of slumber. Lighting can help us move naturally towards a good rest at night. We can use a bedside lamp with proper brightness for comfortable reading before we go to bed. We need to lower the brightness of bedroom light as long as it is still bright enough for us to find a way around.
