We all know there is no place like home for Christmas season. If our home is a little short on Christmas cheer, we may just be cheating our family out of some special festival glee. For creating yuletide joy instantly, lighting can be the most useful decorations. To create a glowing wonderland at home, here are some tips for proper use or storage of holiday lights.

Before we get started, we need to consider these things. Are the holiday lights for indoor or outdoor use? Will the lights be left outdoors or used near kids? Where will the Christmas lights be installed?

Purchase Holiday Lights From Reliable Retailer

When we buy new Christmas lights for home decoration, we need first check out things like the certificate of approval or some approval mark that show they lights are safe enough to use. Purchase the holiday lights from reputable light suppliers. Refer to the customer reviews of the holiday lights. If the retailers know the electrical equipment safety requirements for offering holiday lights, that would be much better. We need to especially be aware of the lights if we choose to buy them online or from overseas retailers, especially because other countries may have different safety standards.

Know Lights for Different Uses

Try to know the holiday lights very well, especially differentiate the lights for different uses. The lights for indoors and outdoors differ to some degree. For outdoor use, the decorative lights have to be of much better quality, especially superior resistance to poor weather. When we choose the Christmas lights used for decorating the Christmas tree, we need to make sure the lights are safe for outdoor use. Check out the label of the lights to see whether it is marked “UL or ETL Approved”, which means that the lights are tested safe for use.

Inspect Lights for Possible Damage

It is inevitable to find some busted lights. Some lights may get damaged in storage or in transit. Other lights may have some defects the time we buy them. Such lights pose a safety hazard. In this way, we need to check them out to see whether there is something wrong with the wire, bulb or fuse, connections, etc. Just have a check of any exposed wires or loose connections. If you purchase holiday lights online, just remember to ask for some replacements.

Never Overload Power Strips with Holiday Lights

We love to string the holiday lights together for spectacular look, but actually it might pose danger if we plug too many lights on just one power strip. Most often, one power strip can hold up to three sets of lights at a time. If we have more lights, try to use several extension cords for safety.

Avoid Hanging Lights on Metal Trees

Metal trees seem more and more popular these days for they can beautifully spruce up the holiday decoration. But when holiday lights hang on them, there may be danger. Metal trees draped with lights may get charged, which might electrocute those who touch the trees or even cause short out that could lead to fire.

Make sure to turn off the holiday lights when they are not in use. Now most of the decorative lights are those LED holiday lights. For they are electricity efficient and hardly get overheat, we tend to let it illuminate overnight. But still turn off Christmas lights, especially if the lights are not LEDs.
