Home Light Decoration: Light Up Rooms with Different Layers of Lighting

We may get used to the overhead lighting at home office or commercial office, as long as it is not overly glaringly bright, nor is uncomfortably dark. Usually, a room may look fine with the ceiling lights on. But if there are other lights such as pendant lights over the counter, that would really shine. That's what we try to share in this post. Layering is a great way to light a room which can be agreeable to work in and beautiful to be in.

As for lighting, most of us may be concerned about whether our place look nice. Besides energy efficiency, basic illumination, good lighting can make all the other decoration elements in our rooms look nice, whether they are expensive artwork you put at home or furniture, carpets, etc. Good lighting can also lift up our mood and dispel stress. For a good lighting, we need to make the best use of different layers of lighting.

We can keep our lamps or ceiling lights on various controls, and choose some dimmers to make the room brighter or darker as we love. To decorate a dinner party, try to use chandelier, and use dimmers on other lights in the dining room so that they can just cast in dramatic shadow. Such layer of lighting can just go with the mood needed for the dinner party. We need to well control the light for setting any scene that a special occasion needs. A well illuminated room always requires multiple sources of lighting.

Among all the different light sources, general lighting may be the most familiar to all. It is the starting point, the light that guides the way when we enter a room. Most often, the general lighting offers us light from above. It provides us with flat illumination, but it is never enough.

Task lighting is mainly used to light up a certain area, especially where there is work. They just cancel out the shadows from overhead lights. We can see task lights in the kitchen, at home office , etc. The common task lights are the pendant lights that cast some concentrated light onto a particular area.

We use task lights in the kitchen, but for full illuminating the shadow, we also use under-counter lighting, which usually come in LED strips. The under-counter lights are usually the lights that can  soften the overall ambiance in the kitchen.

Besides the lights for illumination, there are lights for decoration, such as chandelier. Chandeliers are mainly used to cast light on the dinner table and give us romantic atmosphere for dining time.

For the bedroom light decoration, we often use bedside lamps for late night reading or wall mounted lights. For the bathroom lighting, we use sconces.

Accent lighting is all in the details. We can see them used for highlight a piece of artwork at home or show off a centerpiece during holiday season.

Light decoration for special occasions, especially holiday season needs to create special effects. We can see more and more LED lights of various colors and designs used for function, drama and style.
